Like many mariners of the day, he was drawn to Portugal and its islands, especially Madeira, where he commanded a merchant vessel. At least once he voyaged to the Portuguese outpost on the Gold Coast.

He set sail from Bristol in late May 1497 in the Mathew, reaching his destination about a month later. Scholars disagree about the location of Cabot’s landfall, but all recognize the importance of his month-long exploration of the coast of modern Newfoundland. Having achieved his goal, Cabot rode the Westerlies back to England, arriving just fifteen days after he left North America. The voyages of Columbus, Cabot, and their successors finally brought the Eastern and Western Hemispheres together.
