In 1928, when I was 10 and my brother 6, we spent a month on a cattle ranch in Colorado. The occasion was a reunion of the American members of the Poland and Gilpin-Brown families. For me it was a turning point. It was a time of maturation, of learning to take responsibility, of conquering fear. I learned I had to make decisions on my own. Certainly without realizing it, I was preparing the early groundwork necessary for future things like test flying. Page 9 Chapter 2 Awakenings The ranch belonged to my grandmother's younger sister Ethel and her husband Gordon Johnson, and was in the same Rocky Mountain foothills northwest of Fort Collins where my grandmother's ranch had been.

She was considered Page 14 to be very pretty and very popular and was thought to be quite a catch when she was young. Because of her Boston education, she felt a need to open a small school for the ranch children and for any Indian child who would come. When her husband diedwhen he was only 40 years oldshe went to Greeley, Colorado, to teach at the state university. Then, in the early 1900s she took her two daughters back east to New York City where she became dean at Columbia University. Frances became a singer in the Metropolitan Opera, and my mother became an artist.

I returned from the West more confident and more knowledgeable in many ways, not the least of which was what older girls do (whisper and giggle) and what they talk about (boys and their looks). In 1929 came the stock-market crash, followed by the Depression years. Life became subdued and worrisome. " We had visitors, too, men who came to the back door looking for work, any kind; some even asked for food. It was a case of those who could helping those who were less fortunate. When things settled down a bit, I was sent off for the summer to Camp Mudjekeewis ("West Wind"), a girl's camp on Lake Kezar in Maine.
